Though the celebrations for Earth Day 2020 will look a bit different than in years past, celebrating our planet is now more necessary than ever. Every April 22 serves as a reminder of the steps each person on the planet can take to reduce our carbon footprint, limit our intake of natural resources and overall live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Luckily, even if Earth Day will need to be celebrated from home this year, there are many easy ways we can begin to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle from the comfort of our own houses. Most of these lifestyle swaps are easy enough that anyone can do them, from little ones to older adults who have never found the time to go green. Read on to learn some easy ways to make your home more sustainable!
Now that we’re all spending more time indoors, it’s never been a better time to conduct a plastic audit in your home. Considering that an estimated 12.7 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year, it’s clear that we all need to drastically reduce our plastic waste intake. Go to each room in your home and see where you’re using plastic that could easily be swapped out for something reusable. Some easy suggestions to get you started are:
- Invest in some reusable shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags. For the plastic bags you still have in your home, use them as trash can liners for bedroom and bathroom waste to ensure they’re being used.
- Opt for reusable coffee pods instead of single-use ones. Not only will you save money in the long run, you’ll be shocked at how much less waste you produce.
- Use up your plastic toothbrush and cutlery, and the next time they need replacing opt for bamboo instead. Bamboo is much more sustainable, and will decompose naturally instead.
- The next time you head out to do your errands, pick up a reusable coffee cup and water bottle. These are much better for the planet, plus help you reduce your intake of completely unnecessary single-use plastic cups that end up in landfills.
No matter how you choose to reduce your carbon footprint, remember that we all only get one planet. As the old saying goes, “there is no planet B,” so make sure you’re being conscious of that as a consumer!
