Brett Stadelmann

I’m the founder and editor of Unsustainable Magazine, an independent publication I launched in 2019 covering sustainability, climate, society, and systems change.

I’m also a contributing author. My writing focuses on evidence-aware explainers, ethical publishing, and making complex sustainability topics clearer without oversimplifying them.

My editorial role

I review and edit every article published on Unsustainable Magazine. This includes improving structure and clarity, checking that claims are proportional to the available evidence, strengthening sourcing where needed, and ensuring uncertainty is clearly signposted rather than smoothed over.

Since launching the publication, I’ve reviewed and edited over 1,000 articles. More broadly, I’ve worked with long-form text across fiction and nonfiction for roughly two decades.

Background and approach

I’m a self-published fiction author and long-time editor. My editorial approach is shaped by interdisciplinary study and systems thinking, with personal study spanning areas such as physics, philosophy, history, and permaculture.

This background informs how I evaluate claims, weigh evidence, and recognise uncertainty — particularly in complex or contested sustainability topics.

Principles

  • Reader-first: I prioritise clarity, usefulness, and respect for the reader’s time.
  • Evidence-aware: strong claims require strong sources, and estimates should be clearly labelled.
  • Independence: financial support does not determine conclusions, sourcing, or editorial outcomes.
  • Accountability: when mistakes are identified, I aim to correct them promptly and transparently.
