Online exams are now a default assumption in many universities and vocational training settings. Sometimes that shift is thoughtful and student-centred. Sometimes it’s a scramble to replicate in-person invigilation with the fastest available tool.

- Assessment design: Can this be open-book, case-based, or authentic to reduce cheating incentives?
- Necessity test: Is remote proctoring truly required, or is it compensating for an outdated task?
- Minimum data: Collect only what is necessary; avoid “just in case” monitoring.
- Plain-language notice: Tell students exactly what is collected, why, and for how long.
- Meaningful alternatives: Provide in-person supervised or non-proctored pathways where feasible.
- Accessibility: Build accommodations into the default; ensure compatibility with assistive tech.
- Failure pathways: What happens if internet drops or the platform fails mid-exam?
- Fair appeals: Students can challenge flags/decisions without presumption of guilt.
- Retention limits: Set deletion timelines and restrict access to exam data.
- Measure outcomes: Track failure rates, complaints, and false positives; publish improvements.
