Why Your ‘Authentic’ Travel Plans May Be Harming Indigenous Communities” / As Tourism To Indigenous Communities Surges, Experts Warn Of Unintended Consequences
The desire for cultural authenticity has never been stronger, but a responsible travel expert warns that ungoverned tourism can harm the very communities that travelers hope to visit.
Last year, for the first time, more than half of travelers (53%) said they were now conscious of tourism’s impact on local communities, marking a fundamental shift in how people think about sustainable travel.
In 2026, this interest is continuing. According to trend reports for the coming year, 38% of travelers want to embrace regional culture, 32% will be seeking out under-the-radar locations, and 25% want to support local businesses.
But as the appetite for authentic, community-based experiences grows, so too does a troubling trend: well-intentioned travelers making uninformed decisions based on personal whims rather than community needs. As more travelers venture into remote areas seeking “authentic” cultural experiences, they don’t always know how to evaluate the impact of their choices.
Research has found that poorly managed tourism causes displacement, environmental degradation, and cultural commodification for Indigenous communities globally. It can also lead to a form of neo-imperialism, where places prioritise extractive commercial interests before destination well-being.
In the Cook Islands, unregulated tourism development has led to more than 90% of businesses operating non-compliant septic systems along environmentally sensitive shorelines, research reveals. In turn, this caused toxic algal blooms that damage marine ecosystems critical to local livelihoods.
In Malaysia’s Tun Sakaran Marine Park, researchers found that ecotourism does not at all involve the local people who depend on the local land for their resources, instead capitalizing on preconceived notions to create tourist-centered experiences.
Overtourism has taken over many of the world’s iconic destinations, placing commercial interests squarely above community and destination well-being.
Dominique Callimanopulos, Founder of Elevate Destinations, warns: “Many people seeking to ‘travel authentically’ make decisions based primarily on their own inclinations and personal desire rather than the actual needs of the communities they’re wanting to visit. In doing so, interactions will be improvised and informal, which means that fragile communities can be exposed to visitor whims and demands that could have negative consequences.”
Elevate Destinations is an eco-luxury tour operator that arranges custom trips on every continent with a philanthropic and sustainable focus. The company creates trips that have a positive impact on communities through partnerships with ethical ground partners and community stakeholders.
The benefits of properly managed community tourism are significant, and results can include sustainable livelihoods, preserved cultural heritage, and environmental conservation. The key difference is governance: communities having genuine control over tourism activities, including visitor numbers, acceptable behaviors, and revenue distribution.
This kind of “regenerative tourism” differs fundamentally from conventional tourism by placing communities at the center of decision-making. Rather than treating destinations as resources to be consumed, this approach cultivates reciprocal relationships where local people determine how tourism will be planned and implemented.
“Travelers who want genuinely authentic experiences that also do good should book with tour operators that are proactive in their ethical choices and engaged in the growing regenerative travel movement. Regenerative tourism is more than just minimizing impact and instead prioritizes community-directed growth and lasting conservation. It also adds an ethical layer that travelers may struggle to evaluate and replicate on their own.”
In Kenya, for example, vast private ranches have been converted to conservancies that benefit both the community and conservation.
The Northern Rangelands Trust includes 45 member conservancies, providing a voice for a multiplicity of pastoralist communities and a platform for livelihood and land management while safeguarding conservation principles. These conservancies maintain first-rate lodges that host tourists in an ethical manner.
For travelers genuinely committed to supporting local communities, Callimanopulos recommends shifting their mindset from “How unique can I travel?” to “Who will benefit from my presence, and in what lasting way?”
“The smartest travelers will be those recognizing that authentic experiences require authentic partnerships. Working with responsible tour operators who have established relationships and understand community protocols isn’t a barrier to genuine authenticity – it’s actually the route to it.”
Travelers should look for tour operators that:
- Work directly with community leaders and Indigenous governance structures
- Provide evidence of how tourism revenue benefits local people
- Follow established codes of conduct developed by communities themselves
- Limit visitor numbers to sustainable levels
- Invest in local capacity building and infrastructure
- Can demonstrate long-term partnerships with destinations
- Align their operations with standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council
“Ultimately, traveling with operators who incorporate genuine sustainable and regenerative practices means that your journey is much more likely to actively support the long-term health of the destination you’re visiting rather than harm it. This can often be the key difference between tourism that takes and tourism that genuinely gives back.”
