Unsafe housing can keep people stuck in survival mode

Preparedness can help, but constant checking can harm
Preparedness is useful. A household emergency plan, a go-bag, stored water, copies of documents, medication lists, pet plans, neighbour contacts and trusted alert sources can all make a real difference. Practical preparation can reduce the mental load because it replaces vague dread with specific action.
But there is a tipping point. Checking alerts every few minutes, repeatedly inspecting the sky, compulsively reading disaster updates, or mentally rehearsing worst-case scenarios all day can keep the nervous system activated. The goal is not to ignore risk. The goal is to relate to risk in a way that still leaves room for ordinary life.
A more sustainable approach might include:
- Choosing a small number of trusted weather and emergency sources instead of constantly refreshing social media.
- Setting specific times to check alerts when conditions are uncertain.
- Making a written household plan so decisions do not have to be made from panic.
- Talking with neighbours before emergencies happen.
- Preparing supplies in advance, then allowing yourself to stop preparing.
- Seeking mental health support if fear, sleep loss, irritability, numbness or constant alertness is disrupting daily life.
None of these steps will solve climate change. They will not make a floodplain safe or a badly insulated home cool. But they can help people regain some agency while larger systems catch up.
Community resilience is nervous-system resilience too
When governments, councils and planners talk about climate resilience, they often focus on infrastructure: sea walls, drainage, firebreaks, grid upgrades, road access, backup power and emergency services. Those things matter. But resilience also lives in relationships.
Do people know where to go during extreme heat? Do elderly residents have someone checking on them? Can renters report unsafe housing without fear of eviction? Are public warnings accessible to people with disabilities, limited English, low literacy or poor internet access? Are community spaces available during smoke events, floods, blackouts or heatwaves? Are disaster recovery services still present after the cameras leave?
A community that answers those questions well reduces more than physical risk. It reduces the feeling of abandonment that so often follows disaster.

There is a risk in talking about climate stress as a personal wellbeing issue. It can make structural failure sound like an individual coping problem.
That would be wrong.
If someone feels unsafe because their town keeps flooding, their home overheats, their insurance has collapsed, their drinking water is unreliable, or their community is repeatedly exposed to wildfire smoke, the answer is not simply breathing exercises. What a more humane climate response would include
A humane climate response would treat mental health as part of adaptation, not an optional extra.
That could mean trauma-informed disaster recovery services. It could mean funding local mental health care after fires, floods and storms, not only during the immediate emergency. It could mean designing cooling centres that are easy to reach without a car. It could mean repairing mouldy flood-damaged housing quickly. It could mean giving communities clear, honest information before disasters arrive, and staying with them through the long recovery.
It also means designing homes, streets and public spaces for the climate people are actually living in now. Shade, ventilation, insulation, clean indoor air, flood-aware planning, safe evacuation routes and reliable public services are not luxuries. They are part of what lets people feel that the world around them is still basically habitable.
That feeling is not sentimental. It is foundational. People cannot plan, care, work, organise, parent, recover or participate fully in community life if they are permanently braced for impact.
A sustainable future should feel liveable
Sustainability is often measured in tonnes of carbon, kilowatt-hours, recycled materials, biodiversity outcomes and avoided waste. Those measures matter. But a sustainable society must also be judged by whether people can live in it without their bodies constantly preparing for danger.
The climate crisis is already changing how people sleep, plan, insure, move, cool their homes, read the sky and think about the future. Some of that distress is an appropriate response to real risk. Some of it becomes harmful when the body never gets the message that the danger has passed.
The answer is not to pathologise people for noticing instability. The answer is to build a world that creates less of it.
That means cutting emissions. It means adapting homes and cities. It means protecting the people most exposed to heat, smoke, floods and fires. It means taking mental health seriously in disaster planning. And it means remembering that resilience is not only about infrastructure surviving the next event.
It is also about people being able to stand down, breathe, and feel safe enough to live.
