The shower base must also direct water toward the drain. Even highly water-resistant porcelain cannot compensate for an incorrectly sloped base, failed membrane or poorly detailed drain connection.

When a shower leaks, the environmental consequences can extend beyond replacing a few tiles. Moisture may damage framing, insulation, flooring, cabinetry and adjoining rooms, turning a preventable installation problem into a material-intensive renovation.

Installation Quality Often Matters More Than Tile Type

Neither ceramic nor porcelain is automatically slip-resistant. Performance depends on the particular finish, texture, tile size, grout layout and conditions in which it is used.

Small tiles can offer an advantage on shower floors because their additional grout joints provide texture and allow the surface to follow the slope toward the drain. Larger tiles can still work, particularly with linear drainage systems, but they need to be specified and installed carefully.

Think Beyond Recycled Content

Some tile manufacturers use recycled material or recover manufacturing waste within their production processes. These can be positive attributes, but they do not establish the overall environmental performance of a product.

Ceramic tile requires high-temperature firing, which can be energy intensive. Raw-material extraction, manufacturing efficiency, energy sources, packaging, transport distance, installation waste and service life can all affect the final footprint.

Design for a Long Visual Life

A shower can remain technically sound and still be removed because its appearance feels tied to a short-lived trend. Design longevity therefore deserves a place in the sustainability discussion.

Grout and flexible sealant joints usually need more attention than the tile itself. Cracking, separation or persistent discolouration should be investigated rather than simply covered.
